New Canaan Moves July 4 Fireworks Launch Site 300 Yards
Parks and Recreation · Meeting of May 13, 2026
New Canaan moves its July 4 fireworks launch site 300 yards to fix last year's traffic snarl. The Parks and Recreation Commission heard from Family Fourth of July Committee chairman George that the change follows 2025's exit gridlock, when 14 unexploded mortars shut down the Laurel Road exit for hours. The Board of Selectmen, fire marshal and fire department have all signed off.
Organizers are capping passes at 2,500 for a crowd that topped 8,000 last year, adding QR-code text alerts for gate closures, and debuting a formal "sensory care zone" at the high school soccer field. A new tap-to-pay system made 97 percent of pass purchases cashless. The commission also unanimously approved a September 26 Garden Club reception at Irwin Park and a single July 1 firefly-watching tour at Waveny led by local expert Bill McDonald.

NEW CANAAN — May 13, 2026 — The New Canaan Parks and Recreation Commission learned Wednesday that this year's Fourth of July fireworks launch point is moving roughly 300 yards east at Waveny Park, a change organizers say should fix the traffic bottleneck that trapped exiting crowds last summer.
The commission also voted unanimously to approve a Garden Club reception at Irwin Park in September and a single public firefly-watching tour at Waveny in July, and heard an update from the YMCA on its summer day camp and from Friends of Waveny Playground on a donor-recognition sign still in design.
The Full Story
Commission members approved the minutes of the April 15 meeting and then took up two smaller requests before the night's dominant topic. The Garden Club's reception, originally planned for May, was pushed to September 26 and capped at 30 to 40 guests, with organizers required to notify the commission if that number grows. Members also approved a July 1 firefly tour from 9 to 9:30 p.m. in the meadow behind Waveny House, organized with the New Canaan Land Trust and led by local firefly expert Bill McDonald. The commission's own firefly sanctuary will stay closed this season for trail and habitat restoration, and organizers said they expect 25 to 30 attendees.
The bulk of the meeting belonged to the Family Fourth of July Committee, led by chairman George, which walked the commission through changes for this year's fireworks show at Waveny Park. The launch site is shifting away from the porch of Waveny House to a spot roughly 300 yards to the east, a move already approved by the Board of Selectmen, the fire marshal, emergency management and the fire department. Committee leaders said the change directly answers complaints from 2025, when 14 unexploded mortar shells forced a lengthy shutdown of the Laurel Road exit and left thousands of cars filtering out through a single route.
"Last year exiting the park was very, very troublesome. We had 14 mortars that were unexploded, and they had to be taken care of, and everybody had to be filtered out only one way, and it was tough on everybody for traffic." — George, Family Fourth of July Committee chairman
This year's pass will carry a QR code linking to text alerts on gate closures and road conditions, including South Avenue, after visitors last year sat in line without knowing an exit was already shut. The committee also formalized a "sensory care zone" at the New Canaan High School soccer field, adding lighting, portable toilets, garbage cans and glow-necklace distribution for elderly residents, young families and people with disabilities or sensory sensitivities.
"I have a child with special needs, and I've been bringing him there to watch the fireworks, and it's been very a huge success." — Lauren, Family Fourth of July Committee volunteer
Entertainment changes are also underway. Longtime master of ceremonies Dan Taylor stepped aside this year, tapped instead to announce the nation's 250th-anniversary events in Washington, D.C.; radio broadcaster Peter Bush will take his place. The rock band Mind the Gap pulled out at the last minute and was replaced by a ska group called One Bad Oyster, which asked permission to sell merchandise at the event; the commission indicated it generally does not allow sales in town parks without separate Board of Selectmen approval. Tom Staten, the committee's chairman emeritus, said 13 food trucks are booked this year, the same as 2025, at a $125 per-truck fee. Organizers reported 2,500 passes will be printed for a crowd that topped 8,000 last year, and said a new tap-to-pay system arranged through Walter Stewart's Market made 97 percent of ticket transactions cashless.
Director John also reported that Waveny's swimming pond has been pumped, sanded and is refilling at about 27,000 gallons a day ahead of a season opening in less than two weeks, though the YMCA's day camp will not use the pond this summer. Three new portable lifeguard stands are being assembled. Separately, the Board of Selectmen approved a patio, donor walkway and water fountain for the Waveny Playground project on May 5, with work expected to wrap this month.
Why It Matters
The fireworks relocation is the most consequential logistical change to New Canaan's largest single annual gathering, an event that drew roughly 8,000 people and 1,500 cars last year. Committee leaders say the new launch point should let traffic exit in two directions instead of one, addressing the worst complaint from 2025. Residents planning to attend should expect a new pass system with real-time text alerts on road and gate closures, a formal sensory-friendly viewing area at the high school, and a cap of 2,500 passes for a crowd that has regularly exceeded that number in past years.
